About Us
The Schieffelin Institute of Health Research and Leprosy Centre (SIHRLC) was established in 1955 with the primary goal of caring for leprosy afflicted individuals and to study the multiple, interlinked aspects of leprosy. Initially referred to as Schieffelin Leprosy Research Sanitorium, it was renamed as the Schieffelin Research & Training Centre in 1977 only to be further changed as the Schieffelin Institute of Health Research and Leprosy Centre (SIHRLC) in 2006 - to emphasize the integrated nature of the institution.
Further along this line the focus was expanded from not only leprosy but to various other health care challenges of the era as well as to further the holistic approach to health care.
Thoughts along this line paved way for the establishment of a branch at the Katpadi area. Turning the sod (17th July 2004) and laying the foundation stone a month later on 16th August 2004, the building was completed and dedicated to service, as the Paul Brand Integrated Health Center (PBIHC) on 23rd July 2005.
Along with clinical care, the focus was expanded to training allied health care workers for the many facets of health care resulting in the inauguration of the College of Health Sciences at PBIHC in 2011.
The practice continues till date with the trainees gaining practical and theoretical knowledge in both the main campus as well as the PBIHC, Katpadi campus.
The scope of services is ever expanding with an all-inclusive approach to address and meet the health care needs of the community and population on the whole.
As of now, the basic services of general medicine, dermatology, pediatrics form the core of the institution, with specialties like dental and ophthalmology running clinics on select days and with the later also reaching out to the community through camps on select days of each month.

The Paul Brand Integrated Health Centre (PBIHC) is essentially an out-patient clinic offering services in the fields mentioned. Recognizing the hurdles of most working individuals who couldn’t take hours off, resulting in neglecting their health needs – the consultation services have been extended until 8 pm. Thus, on all week days the clinic functions from 8 am to 8pm. On Saturdays the working hours are as before i.e. 8am to 12 noon The ophthalmology division (eye clinic) consultation hours are 8am to 12 noon on Mondays and Fridays as well as from 4pm to 8 pm on Tuesdays. Dental consultations may be short but the procedures are of long duration – so, day time is not an ideal option for many because of losing working hours. Hence the dental clinic functions both as morning clinic (8 am to 12 noon) as well as evening clinic (4pm to 8pm) from Monday to Friday, while on Saturday the hours are the general routine of 8 am to 12 noon. The soon to start Ear Nose Throat (ENT) clinics will expand the reach out on all fronts. |

Laboratory Testing
Clinical Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and specialized tests with automated systems and quick reporting.
Radiographic Imaging
Computerized Radiography (CR X-Ray) and Ultrasonography services.
Laboratory Testing : PBIHC offers various clinical pathology, clinical biochemistry, clinical microbiology and other tests of relevance to our patient community. All non-microscopic tests are automated with reduced turn-around-time. We also do some tests in collaboration with the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore.
Radiographic Imaging :
X-ray and ultrasonography are the two
imaging techniques employed at PBIHC with
the X-ray being CR type (Computerized
radiography).
Apart from individualized physiotherapy
and prosthetic & orthotic products, other
products like eye-safe driving glasses,
prescription spectacles, MCR chappals,
cad-cam insoles etc. are few of the products
that are available for sale.

Extended Services
PBIHC diagnostic services are not restricted to their patients but are extended to all those who seek testing, even if they do not consult PBIHC doctors. i.e. If an outside doctor has suggested and X-ray or ultrasound or blood test etc, if the patient wishes, they could get tested at PBIHC, without seeing PBIHC doctors. They can collect the reports and consult with their own doctors. This is also applicable to individuals who want to get tested (e.g., blood sugar test) though no doctor has requested, they can get tested and get the reports .

Hemodialysis Centre – Coming Soon
With chronic kidney disease in India being prevalent in about 15% of the population and with an ever-increasing trend, transplantation and dialysis are the need of the hour. With the dearth in availability of kidney donors, hemodialysis is the mainstay of survival for many a patient. Recognizing this need, the PBIHC is in the process of establishing a hemodialysis center with the goal being quality sustained therapy at affordable rates. A dialysis center is coming soon at PBIHC.
